What does sc mean in crochet

Slip stitches. What is double crochet? Double crochet is a taller stitch than single crochet. It is formed by a "yarn over," which is wrapping yarn from back to front before placing the hook in the stitch. You should have 3 loops on hook. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops on the hook. Yarn over again and pull through remaining 2 loops. How do I start to crochet? How to begin Step 1: Hold crochet hook in right hand and make a slip knot on hook. Step 2: Bring yarn over hook from back to front and grab it with hook.

Step 3: Draw hooked yarn through slip knot and onto hook. Step 4: Skip the first chain stitch. Row 2: Sc in each sc across. Row 2: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across. Just do it the way the pattern tells you to. When working Row 3 and all following rows in single crochet, never count the turning ch-1 as a stitch. It just disappears, like the skipped stitch when you worked the foundation chain. Now they count as a stitch. Now count 4 chains away from the hook, and work a double crochet into that chain, skipping the first 3 chains.

Then work a double crochet in each of the remaining 13 chains. You now have 15 double crochet stitches. How can that be when you have only worked 14 double crochets?

Remember those first 3 chains you skipped when you worked the first double crochet into the 4th chain from the hook? Those 3 skipped chains count as first double crochet of the row, and on following rows you will work into the top chain of those 3 chains just as though they were a regular dc stitch. At the end of this row, or the beginning of the next, the pattern will tell you how many chain stitches you need to raise the yarn to the height of the stitches for the next row.

For single crochet, that was one ch, and that chain did not count as a stitch. But for double crochet, a taller stitch, you need to make 3 chains and then turn. And this time the 3 chains count as a stitch. So on the next row, you assume that the chain 3 counts as the first dc, and you will work into the next stitch, not the first stitch See Figure 5.

Unless your pattern tells you otherwise, on all stitches taller than a single crochet, the turning chain is counted as the first stitch of the row. In addition to using lots of abbreviations and terms, crochet patterns use several symbols to tell you what to do.

Crochet patterns often have a series of steps that are repeated several times across a row. A pattern might read like this:. That means that the steps following the asterisk are to be repeated, in order, until you reach the end of the row. United Kingdom. Rest of the World. Search Catalog Search. Am I suppose to chain 17 separately and if so then why? When I look at the Work 2nd side instructions they say to join yarn Join what yarn?

The 17 chain? I just don't understand this because if I do that then I would have 9 chains unworked across the row. I am ultimately trying to work this piece without having to seem anything together.

The picture is at an angle so I can't really see how it ultimately, fully is suppose to look. It just doesn't make sense why I would have to Chain 17 at the top of the instructions for the Work 1st Side instructions.

Please help. Thank you. Hi, I am working on a beanie pattern that is worked in rounds and would like clarification on the 8th round. It reads: 2dc in next dc, 1dc in each of next 17dc 0 4 times, 1dc in each of next 75 3 dc, 1 hdc in each of next 2dc, 1sc in each of next 2dc, sl st in next dc 84 sts.

Clarification is needed on the 0, 4, and 3. Do I repeat what is in parentheses 0 or 4 times? What is the 3 for? Thanks so much. Bless your heart for making this a photo. So easy touch-hold and save image pops up! I can send it easily in an email or message. I am having a lot of trouble with blouse patterns they just don't seem to come out right. That's all I got. But it is pretty!! Hi Ashley, thanks for the info I have found this really helpful. I am teaching myself how to crochet and have been working on squares to get to grips with the different stitches and am now thinking of taking on something a bit more advanced, like a jumper.

But I am left handed, so, I am concerned that anything that I make will be the wrong way round! As I will be working left to right on my crocheting not right to left.

What do you think? Thanks :D. I have a friend that is a leftie. I'll ask her for her opinion. For the most part everything is the same.
