In May he was one of four Liberals whose efforts resulted in amendments to the Freedom of Information Bill, one of which provided for the scrutiny of documents used by agencies to interpret legislation and procedural rules. In November he crossed the floor with six other Liberals, supporting a motion for the establishment of the Senate Standing Committee on the Scrutiny of Bills, whose purpose was, and remains, to scrutinise bills for breaches of civil liberties.

Bonner was never slow to proclaim his Aboriginality. Being a moderate did not make him a cringer before a white population. In Bonner moved a motion that acknowledged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the original owners of the continent and urged the Australian Government to pay compensation for the dispossession of the land. During the first few months of his Senate career, he was prepared to support the Queensland Government over its declaration of a state of emergency for the tour by the South African rugby union team.

Mutual disenchantment followed. In the face of a centralist government in Canberra, Aboriginal and state issues merged in With all Liberal senators, he supported an amendment by Senator Peter Rae that would allow Aboriginal communities to restrict who could visit their lands. It was unsuccessful. After various changes, including an amendment by Senator Cavanagh, the bill finally passed both houses in May Bonner would compliment Cavanagh for his work on this legislation.

He also praised the Fraser Government for implementing some improvements in Aboriginal land policy. In March Bonner was appointed chair of the Select Committee on Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders, which presented its final report on sacred sites in August The committee found that Northern Territory provisions regarding entry onto Aboriginal land and for the protection of sacred sites were inadequate.

It also recommended that Aboriginal communities enjoy the right to exclusive use of certain areas of the seas adjacent to their land, a right eventually confirmed by the High Court in This led to an immediate announcement by the Queensland Government that it would turn the reserves into local government areas, thus placing them outside the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth.

The committee presented its report in November, outlining ways in which the Commonwealth might proceed, but the Fraser Government took no further action. At other times, Bonner and the two ALP senators had worked together, but this did not rule out vigorous engagement in the usual give and take across the chamber.

Bonner was long troubled by the task of reconciling Indigenous rights and cooperative federalism. Two years later, and no longer a senator, he warned that a treaty with Aboriginal people was jeopardised by the strong temptation, under federalism, to let the states determine Australian approaches to race relations.

In and he was allowed, by special motion, to take the Aboriginal Development Commission Bill, and a replacement bill, through their stages in the Senate, in effect a tribute by the Government to his standing in Aboriginal affairs. The second bill gained assent on 16 May With assistance from Eric Robinson, Bonner survived a testing preselection contest in In fact, there is some suggestion that he had then been of, if not in, the Liberal camp for six years or so.

In later life Bonner asserted himself the only recognised elder of the Jugarah [sometimes rendered Jagera] tribe of the Ipswich region. In fact he was born in northern NSW, where allegedly his mother had taken herself to avoid the long arm of Queensland Aboriginal legislation. She died young and he was brought up by his grandparents, in some poverty but not ignorance; for all the lack of formal schooling, perhaps engendered by a white-kids' walkout when he and his brother and sister turned up for class, his grandfather was an actor, his grandmother a martinet for the proper use of English.

Bonner's young adulthood was usually attributed to carrying his swag in western Queensland, working at a variety of jobs, rising to foreman on an unspecified cattle property. More reliably, in he relocated to Palm Island, the home territory of his first wife, Mona, and spent more than 15 years there before, after her death in , moving back to Ipswich and a brief, unsuccessful career as a boomerang manufacturer.

In he sought Liberal preselection for the Senate and was given the unwinnable third place on the ticket. The party felt obliged to deliver. Bonner's attitudes to race and related issues were always complex. Early in his senatorial career, four girls boycotted a debutante ball at Nanango, a peanuts-and-cattle town, rather than curtsy to a black senator.

I assisted Neville in his campaigns for election to the Senate in the years following his appointment in , and I was always pleased to welcome him to North Queensland. I do not know Miss Kay, but clearly she is a community leader of note and has obviously done much for the people of her community over many years. Senator Bonner had a very auspicious and distinguished career in the Senate and by the power of his argument, and the fact that he crossed the floor on many occasions to get a better deal for the causes he espoused, he was able to implement a number of changes for the benefit of Australians.

In his life he worked as a dairy hand, station hand, stockman and vegetable picker. In , the federal electorate of Bonner, in Queensland, was named in his honour. He crossed the floor of the Senate on some 34 occasions during his term. Learn more about Neville Bonner.

We can't believe that no other channel took it on. There is so much rubbish on this channel and Zen was a real pleasure. When will BBC realize that we are not all mindless idiots? A brilliant, classy bit of telly.

Gutted it hasn't found a new home yet. I agree. More zen with rufus Sewell!!!! So fun to watch. Where is Zen - just discovered it and am so impressed with the show. So well done and a big cut above so much of what is done these days. We were anticipating watching the series only to find out there is only three episodes! Is there not anywhere brainy enough to bring it back!

I hope someone reads this and wakes up!!!! Such a classy show deserves to carry on.. All the garbage coming out of the UK your reality series make ours look like Shakespeare dramas should be an embarrassment to anyone with an once of integrity.

Zen is possibly the most stylish ,well acted and creative mystery you have had since Morse. It does not pander. The location shots in Italy are tremendous and the cinematography is great.

The idea of a Brit accent in Rome works well,as it enforces the clipped Italian accents of the female characters ,which are very provocative. The dialogue and mannerisms are very Italian, not in the least Anglo. Every woman and man I know felt the urgency of the sexual tension. Italian women have a sophistication and sex appeal the Brits could only dream of.

In closing. It is March 2, as I am writing this little epistle. Downton Abbey is a joke. If one were to read the dialog ,you would see what a hack a Fellows is as a script writer. That show should have been cancelled after the second season. Danny Cohen. If you lie with dogs Best J. Gerber USA. Well said. Well done J Gerber! You're right and it was a travesty that this show was cancelled when endless hours of pap were allowed to be broadcast. At least there's another Branagh Wallander on its way and the excellent Hinterland - filmed in Wales and with a bilingual script, sadly BBC were too chicken to give it a prime time slot, but at least you can watch it in BBC4 and iPlayer.

Hopefully Left Bank can find another channel for Zen but as so much time has passed it looks doubtful. I was so sorry to see this series and all if it's glory gone. The acting was superb and the characters so interesting to the eye and mind. The Italian surroundings I just loved and wanted to jump in the scene. I hope the decision makers at the BBC get cancelled. Zen needs to return to investigate this cancellation decision.

This short series was well-acted, entertaining and amusing. For once we get something of quality, but the BBC can't recognise this. Of course the opinion of the viewers counts for nothing! What a change from police series set in dreary British cities. What a wonderful series - and Italy as the backdrop as well. A sparkling change from the cop series in London, New York etc. I cannot believe they axed it - clearly BBC cares not for quality. It's May 31, and our family still misses Zen!

Out here in the boondocks of the U. Still miss Zen. Just enjoying it now on Netflix. However, would love to have seen a second series. My wife and I have hugely enjoyed the series, she was not worried about the lack of strong female characters, but shocked to see so much graffiti. The series, as others have written, does want me to look up the books, and I sincerely hope that the BBC do the same. One question, the series was made in conjunction with ZDF I believe, is there an Italian dubbed version as well?

Not having read the books by Michael Dibdin I came to this series with an open mind and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Rufus Sewell is gorgeous and played Zen with glorious understatement.

The scenery, camera work, clothes and casting was great and I found the writing crisp and witty. Hi, Pretty much agree with all the positive comments above. What a refreshing change from the imported American stuff we are offered these days. The only character I had a real problem with was the Chief Justice which I thought whilst very attractive was wrongly cast.

Yes you could pick at it if you wish but what a delight to the eye with good camera work and wry smiles which keep the mood from being too serious. BBC please take note that most of us could do with a good serving of this any Sunday evening you choose. Beautifully shot, marvellously cast, whitty, intelligent, the BBC at its best! Please can we have more? Tania, have my babies, Rufus,,,,, have my babies? Oh what a joy Zen has been! Fabulous Rome filmed beautifully the good, the bad and the ugly!

Ratking in particular was a complicated but riveting story as well as very funny in parts. Rufus Sewell excellent as Zen and nice to see both Italian as well as English actors. He was quirky, naturalistic and likeable. I liked that my brain had to strain a bit to work out what was going on. I loved the way Rome was shot — it was always a beautiful part of the programme and not inserted a la Three Coins in the Fountain.

In my opinion it is style with substance and I want more! Just a brilliant mini-series — some of the best TV the bbc have produced in a long time. Just hope they do the right thing and give us more! Zen has the potential to be really good, the actors are well chosen and very capable. I think though it should be an hour long and some of the more unnecessary scenes could very easily be cut.

Some of the dialogue is downright dodgy, the actors do well to cope with it as well as they have. Rufus Sewell is a great actor and his subtlety and facial expressions are refreshing.

Zen is a real treat for sunday evening viewing. Rufus Sewell is so easy on the eye as well as the Roman surroundings. I think the BBC is on to a winner and should produce more episodes. Lets see some more please and very soon. More Aurelio Zen. No the TV series is not like the books, so what?

Rufus Sewell has re-created Zen and it works. I thoroughly enjoyed Zen. What a pleasant change! Please let us have some more. I was so much looking forward to Sunday evening and three episodes are just not enough! What more can we say about the past 3 weeks? Having both read the entire Zen collection at least twice we were so saddened at the death of Michael Dibdin and thus the end of Aurelio.

We were so excited at the prospect of the televised dramas and were not at all disappointed. Why is it that we are expected to endure weeks of turgid nonsense like Eastenders and various endless US drama series but whenever something really outstanding like Wallander or Zen comes up, we get only 3 episodes? Zen is pretty much a faultless production from my point of view and has so much going for it — I hope it will be a huge hit so that we get a new series soon.

Its biggest asset even more than the Italian locations is undoubtedly a perfectly cast Rufus Sewell, whose understated style is just a joy to watch. Funny, sexy, grown-up entertainment and pure viewing pleasure. What a refreshing change Zen is compared to the copius amounts of American drivel on our screens and even some of our own dull, dismal British Soaps! Zen is an absolutely brilliant, quirky drama and Refus Sewell plays the character so well!

What glorious Italian backgrounds as well……much more asthetic on the eye than Walford High Street or even Midsomer! Zen is fantastic, very entertaining and different. A welcome change to the usual rubbish thats on tv. More please!!! Had also read a number of the novels some years ago. Sewell, and the entire production, emphasise comic elements, which is all well and good. But in the end, despite the beauty of the setting and the actor, the series is unsatisfying.

What a pity. And what a contrast to the recent Sherlock which will come out with new episodes soon, hooray , which sat much more comfortably in its British context. Brilliant series! Please, please, please can we have more?? Thank you Aunty Beeb. I absolutely agree that Zen was much more interesting than most of the drivel we are offered on TV. It was good to have plots that require attention, dialogue that develops the characters, and humour — all brilliantly acted and produced.

Entirely agree with Karen. Sunday night with intelligent telly sets me up for a week of earning a living. Yes I will add my voice to the clammer for more Zen and other such entertainment.

Friday night we need pulp to relax Sunday night we need Zen. As a lover of TV police procedurals, I welcome Zen as an excellent addition. I love the slight tounge in cheek dry humour of the show, which Rufus pulls off brilliantly and is similar in that respect to A Touch of Frost, although in all other respects is completely different.

Anyway considering the current never ending diet of banal reality shows, food shows, property shows, etc, the is head, shoulders, waist and ankles above the rest, so lets have more and soon! I was home relaxing on Sunday night when the third episode of Zen and sadly the last for now came up and — I must say, I was glued to the tv for the entire time! We were delighted that this fresh and stylish detective drama resonated with British viewers, television critics and fans of the novels alike and remain hugely proud of the three films.

Based on the books by the late Michael Dibdin , Zen won good notices from television critics with the Mail on Sunday calling it, "compelling, stylish and intelligent drama" and the Sunday Telegraph billing it as "the detective drama of the year".

Over its three episodes Zen averaged 5. Speaking in Sweden, Lyons said: "As I'm sure many of you know, over the last few years the UK has enjoyed new exposure to Swedish crime fiction.

My whole background, my whole life was just lots and lots of theater, a lot of that being musical theater. I want to go create my own independent content and entertainment, in new models and in new ways, and essentially show studios and networks that people are good. I think that Family Guy is hysterical. It's edgy and hip - and they can do whatever they want to do because it's animated and they're not limited by budget.

I believe in incentivizing people. If you can incentivize people in anything, whether it's in politics; in life; in spirituality; in business; just take care of folks. Incentivize them and all of a sudden it's amazing the difference that you'll see. Films are really cool because, every couple months, or however many times you can get a job because there's a lot of luck involved in that, you're playing a different character.

Aladdin was probably my favourite Disney animation when I was a kid. The animation was great and Robin Williams was unbelievable as the Genie. Aladdin was an amazing adventure and the lead character was a hero for guys, which I loved. It wasn't a princess or a girl beating the odds; it was a street rat. That seemed really cool to me. There has been a kind of stereotypical 'gamer dude' that has been representative for the gamer community in the years past.

But I want to spearhead or be a part of changing that. There are a lot of people who consider themselves 'spiritual,' but that can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. I don't really talk about it that often, because there's too much talk in the world. Especially with Christians, there's more proselytizing than there is actual living proof of it.

That's kind of sad. If somebody says 'singer-songwriter' to me, the first person I think of is James Taylor. There are plenty of modern singer-songwriters, but there is something about James Taylor that has always resonated with me.

If I have my way, I want to go start making really interactive television. Stuff where you can sit and watch real actors do a real series and they can get into some kind of gun battle and all of a sudden your television prompts you to pick up your controller and all of a sudden, you're playing a first-person shooter.

I'll watch a Pixar movie over and over and over again. The structure balances ideas through antithesis, a rhetorical device that poses contrary qualities against each other: They were peace men, but they preferred revolution ….

How does the structure of those sentences reinforce the main idea of the paragraph? The carefully balanced structure reinforces the idea that the founders were themselves balanced, reasonable men. What inference does Douglass want his audience to draw from his portrayal of the founders? Since he established an identification between the founders and the abolitionists in paragraphs 4 and 6, the temperate qualities he ascribes here to the former apply to the latter as well, and this ascription is important because it addresses the charge that abolitionists were fanatics and monomaniacs.

Often speakers and writers make their points as much by leaving things out as by putting things in. This strategy is known as the strategic silence. What has Douglass omitted in his portrayal of the fathers? Why would he choose to do so? Douglass never mentions the fact that many of the fathers were slave owners. This silence allows Douglass to create his own version of the fathers, untainted by facts that would challenge his portrayal.

Similarly, they deflect the minds of his listeners from points that might lead them to resist his argument. Here you might encourage a debate among your students. Other students may argue that this omission does not weaken his case. Despite being slaveholders, men like Washington and Jefferson did, in fact, establish a nation built on the ideals of justice and freedom.

That many of the founders did not live up to those ideals does not make them any less compelling. They were peace men; but they preferred revolution to peaceful submission to bondage. They were quiet men; but they did not shrink from agitating against oppression. They showed forbearance ; but they knew its limits. They believed in order; but not in the order of tyranny [government rule of absolute power].

You may well cherish the memory of such men. They were great in their day and generation. Their solid manhood stands out the more as we contrast it with these degenerate times. Note: Arguments and counter-arguments lie at the heart of persuasive discourse. Review with your students what speakers and writers try to do when making a case. They put forth their arguments and refute those of their opponents. We offer passages that illustrate all of these strategies. What point of view does Douglass announce in this paragraph?

In paragraph 3 Douglass alluded to the fact that he had been a slave. In this paragraph his listeners discover the full import of the fact for his speech. Identifying himself with the enslaved, he announces that he will consider the Fourth of July from their perspective. How does paragraph 37 relate to paragraph 36? Douglass continues to argue that slaves are men.

How does Douglass develop this paragraph? He does so by listing examples of some of things slaves do that are done by others also: ploughing, planting, building, writing, raising children, etc. For the present, it is enough to affirm the equal manhood of the Negro race. How does Douglass maintain the order and coherence of the first sentence of this paragraph? He employs parallelism, a type of organization in which a writer places similar ideas in a similar structure.

They establish a rhythm that emphasizes each indignity and heighten the emotional impact of the argument. What, am I to argue that it is wrong to make men brutes, to rob them of their liberty, to work them without wages, to keep them ignorant of their relations to their fellow men, to beat them with sticks, to flay their flesh with the lash, to load their limbs with irons, to hunt them with dogs, to sell them at auction, to sunder their families, to knock out their teeth, to burn their flesh, to starve them into obedience and submission to their masters?

Must I argue that a system thus marked with blood, and stained with pollution, is wrong? I will not. I have better employments for my time and strength than such arguments would imply. What, then, remains to be argued? Is it that slavery is not divine; that God did not establish it; that our doctors of divinity [preachers, ministers] are mistaken? There is blasphemy in the thought.

That which is inhuman, cannot be divine! Who can reason on such a proposition? They that can, may; I cannot. The time for such argument is past. What strategy of argument does Douglass employ in this section of his speech? Here Douglass established his own moral authority to speak on the issue of slavery by citing his own experience, by establishing himself as reliable witness with first-hand information. I was born amid such sights and scenes.

To me the American slave-trade is a terrible reality. When a child, my soul was often pierced with a sense of its horrors. There was, at that time, a grand slave mart kept at the head of Pratt Street, by Austin Woldfolk. These men were generally well dressed men, and very captivating in their manners.

Ever ready to drink, to treat, and to gamble. The fate of many a slave has depended upon the turn of a single card; and many a child has been snatched from the arms of its mother by bargains arranged in a state of brutal drunkenness. The flesh-mongers gather up their victims by dozens, and drive them, chained, to the general depot at Baltimore. When a sufficient number have been collected here, a ship is chartered, for the purpose of conveying the forlorn crew to Mobile, or to New Orleans.

From the slave prison to the ship, they are usually driven in the darkness of night; for since the antislavery agitation, a certain caution is observed. In the deep still darkness of midnight, I have been often aroused by the dead heavy footsteps, and the piteous cries of the chained gangs that passed our door.

The anguish of my boyish heart was intense; and I was often consoled, when speaking to my mistress in the morning, to hear her say that the custom was very wicked; that she hated to hear the rattle of the chains, and the heart-rending cries. I was glad to find one who sympathized with me in my horror. How does this paragraph relate to the overall thesis of the speech? Here Douglass offers the strongest illustration of the ways in which America is false to the ideals it has set for itself.

What is the thesis of this paragraph? The ways in which Americans practice their politics and religion are inconsistent with the values and ideals they claim to be following. You boast of your love of liberty, your superior civilization, and your pure Christianity, while the whole political power of the nation as embodied in the two great political parties , is solemnly pledged to support and perpetuate the enslavement of three millions of your countrymen.

You hurl your anathemas at the crowned headed tyrants of Russia and Austria, and pride yourselves on your Democratic institutions, while you yourselves consent to be the mere tools and bodyguards of the tyrants of Virginia and Carolina. You invite to your shores fugitives of oppression from abroad, honor them with banquets, greet them with ovations, cheer them, toast them, salute them, protect them, and pour out your money to them like water; but the fugitives from your own land you advertise, hunt, arrest, shoot and kill.

You glory in your refinement and your universal education yet you maintain a system as barbarous and dreadful as ever stained the character of a nation — a system begun in avarice , supported in pride, and perpetuated in cruelty. You are all on fire at the mention of liberty for France or for Ireland; but are as cold as an iceberg at the thought of liberty for the enslaved of America.

You discourse eloquently on the dignity of labor; yet, you sustain a system which, in its very essence, casts a stigma upon labor. You can bare your bosom to the storm of British artillery to throw off a threepenny tax on tea; and yet wring the last hard-earned farthing [a coin formerly used in Great Britain] from the grasp of the black laborers of your country. Not only does he address a powerful justification for the continuation of slavery — the belief that it is protected by the Constitution — but he also asserts a controversial theory about Constitutional interpretation.

Read its preamble, consider its purposes. Is slavery among them? Is it at the gateway [the preamble]?

It is neither. While I do not intend to argue this question on the present occasion, let me ask, if it be not somewhat singular that, if the Constitution were intended to be, by its framers and adopters, a slave-holding instrument, why neither slavery, slaveholding, nor slave can anywhere be found in it. What would be thought of an instrument [legal agreement, in this case a deed] , drawn up, legally drawn up, for the purpose of entitling [giving ownership to] the city of Rochester to a tract [piece] of land, in which no mention of land was made?

Now, there are certain rules of interpretation, for the proper understanding of all legal instruments. These rules are well established. They are plain, common-sense rules, such as you and I, and all of us, can understand and apply, without having passed years in the study of law. I scout the idea that the question of the constitutionality or unconstitutionality of slavery is not a question for the people.

I hold that every American citizen has a right to form an opinion of the Constitution, and to propagate that opinion, and to use all honorable means to make his opinion the prevailing one.

Without this right, the liberty of an American citizen would be as insecure as that of a Frenchman. Ex-Vice-President Dallas tells us that the Constitution is an object to which no American mind can be too attentive, and no American heart too devoted.

He further says, the Constitution, in its words, is plain and intelligible, and is meant for the home-bred, unsophisticated understandings of our fellow-citizens. Senator Berrien tells us that the Constitution is the fundamental law, that which controls all others.

The charter of our liberties, which every citizen has a personal interest in understanding thoroughly. The testimony of Senator Breese, Lewis Cass, and many others that might be named, who are everywhere esteemed as sound lawyers, so regard the Constitution. I take it, therefore, that it is not presumption in a private citizen to form an opinion of that instrument. Note: Conclusions are important. Ask your students how they function and what they should do.

The final words an audience hears, they often linger and shape the impression of an entire speech. Traditionally, speakers use them to do four things: leave the audience with a favorable opinion, emphasize key points, stimulate an appropriate emotional response, or summarize the argument.

Douglass does not emphasize key points or restate his arguments. Rather, he seeks to cast his case for abolition in a favorable light and instill hope in his listeners. What are conclusions supposed to do? Traditionally, four things: leave the audience with a favorable opinion, emphasize key points, stimulate an appropriate emotional response, or summarize the argument. Even though he has just delivered a dark and stinging denunciation of the country, he does not want his listeners to leave the hall feeling depressed and hopeless.

On what does Douglass base the hope he expresses in this paragraph? He looks to the past and the ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence. JOHN A. At first, he could give no encouragement; with unfeigned diffidence, he expressed his conviction that he was not adequate to the performance of so great a task; the path marked out was wholly an untrodden one; he was sincerely apprehensive that he should do more harm than good.

After much deliberation, however, he consented to make a trial; and ever since that period, he has acted as a lecturing agent, under the auspices either of the American or the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society. In labors he has been most abundant; and his success in combating prejudice, in gaining proselytes, in agitating the public mind, has far surpassed the most sanguine expectations that were raised at the commencement of his brilliant career.

He has borne himself with gentleness and meekness, yet with true manliness of character. As a public speaker, he excels in pathos, wit, comparison, imitation, strength of reasoning, and fluency of language.

There is in him that union of head and heart, which is indispensable to an enlightenment of the heads and a winning of the hearts of others. May his strength continue to be equal to his day! May he continue to "grow in grace, and in the knowledge of God," that he may be increasingly serviceable in the cause of bleeding humanity, whether at home or abroad! Let the calumniators of the colored Page vii race despise themselves for their baseness and illiberality of spirit, and henceforth cease to talk of the natural inferiority of those who require nothing but time and opportunity to attain to the highest point of human excellence.

It may, perhaps, be fairly questioned, whether any other portion of the population of the earth could have endured the privations, sufferings and horrors of slavery, without having become more degraded in the scale of humanity than the slaves of African descent.

Nothing has been left undone to cripple their intellects, darken their minds, debase their moral nature, obliterate all traces of their relationship to mankind; and yet how wonderfully they have sustained the mighty load of a most frightful bondage, under which they have been groaning for centuries!

To illustrate the effect of slavery on the white man,--to show that he has no powers of endurance, in such a condition, superior to those of his black brother, -- DANIEL O'CONNELL, the distinguished advocate of universal emancipation, and the mightiest champion of prostrate but not conquered Ireland, relates the following anecdote in a speech delivered by him in the Conciliation Hall, Dublin, before the Loyal National Repeal Association, March 31, It has a natural, an inevitable tendency to brutalize every noble faculty of man.

An American sailor, who was cast away on the shore of Africa, where he was kept in slavery for three years, was, at the expiration of that period, found to be imbruted and stultified--he had lost all reasoning power; and having forgotten his native language, could only utter some savage gibberish between Arabic and English, which nobody could understand, and which even he himself found difficulty in pronouncing. DOUGLASS has very properly chosen to write his own Narrative, in his own style, and according to the best of his ability, rather than to employ some one else.

It is, therefore, entirely his own production; and, considering how long and dark was the career he had to run as a slave,--how few have been his opportunities to improve his mind since he broke his iron fetters--it is, in my judgment, highly creditable to his head and heart.

He who can peruse it without a tearful eye, a heaving breast, an afflicted spirit,--without being filled with an unutterable abhorrence of slavery and all its abettors, and animated with a determination to seek the immediate overthrow of that execrable system,--without trembling for the fate of this country in the hands of a righteous God, who is ever on the side of the oppressed, and whose arm is not shortened that it cannot save,--must have a flinty heart, and be qualified to act the part of a trafficker "in slaves and the souls of men.

Many have suffered incomparably more, while very few on the plantations have suffered less, than himself. Yet how deplorable was his situation! This Narrative contains many affecting incidents, many passages of great eloquence and power; but I think the most thrilling one of them all is the description DOUGLASS gives of his feelings, as he stood soliloquizing respecting his fate, and the chances of his one day being a freeman, on the banks of the Chesapeake Bay--viewing the receding vessels as they flew with their white wings before the breeze, and apostrophizing them as animated by the living spirit of freedom.

Who can read that passage, and be insensible to its pathos and sublimity? Compressed into it is a whole Alexandrian library of thought, feeling, and sentiment--all that can, all that need be urged, in the form of expostulation, entreaty, rebuke, against that crime of crimes,--making man the property of his fellow-man!

O, how accursed is that system, which entombs the godlike mind of man, defaces the divine image, reduces those who by creation were crowned Page x with glory and honor to a level with four-footed beasts, and exalts the dealer in human flesh above all that is called God!

Why should its existence be prolonged one hour? Is it not evil, only evil, and that continually? What does its presence imply but the absence of all fear of God, all regard for man, on the part of the people of the United States?

Heaven speed its eternal overthrow! So profoundly ignorant of the nature of slavery are many persons, that they are stubbornly incredulous whenever they read or listen to any recital of the cruelties which are daily inflicted on its victims. They do not deny that the slaves are held as property; but that terrible fact seems to convey to their minds no idea of injustice, exposure to outrage, or savage barbarity.

Tell them of cruel scourgings, of mutilations and brandings, of scenes of pollution and blood, of the banishment of all light and knowledge, and they affect to be greatly indignant at such enormous exaggerations, such wholesale misstatements, such abominable libels on the character of the southern planters! As if all these direful outrages were not the natural results of slavery!

As if it were less cruel to reduce a human being to the condition of a thing, than to give him a severe flagellation, or to deprive him of necessary food and clothing!

As if whips, chains, thumb-screws, paddles, bloodhounds, overseers, drivers, patrols, were not all indispensable to keep the slaves down, and to give protection to their ruthless oppressors!

As if, when the marriage institution is abolished, concubinage, adultery, and incest, must not necessarily abound; when all the rights of humanity are annihilated, any barrier remains to protect the victim from the fury of the spoiler; when absolute power is assumed over life and liberty, it will not be wielded with destructive sway!

Skeptics of this character abound in society. In some few instances, their incredulity arises from a want of Page xi reflection; but, generally, it indicates a hatred of the light, a desire to shield slavery from the assaults of its foes, a contempt of the colored race, whether bond or free. Such will try to discredit the shocking tales of slaveholding cruelty which are recorded in this truthful Narrative; but they will labor in vain.

Some claim that Walt Disney kept Caselotti under contract to prevent her from getting work, although that seems unlikely. Either way, the result is the same. She and the actor who played Prince Charming tried to wrangle a better deal after Disney. The two brought their plight to the court, claiming they were owed money for the Snow White soundtrack. Both were unsuccessful. Although they lost in court, it is possible that Walt Disney made some sort of back-room arrangement with Caselotti.

Walt Disney arrived in a limo with his wife, Lillian. Crowds wrapped around the block; huge floodlights lit the scene. Among all the celebrities, one glamorous young woman went unnoticed.

Her name was Adriana Caselotti, and she provided the innocent, lilting voice of Snow White. Three years earlier, Adriana, then 19, had landed the role of the lonely, lost princess by happy chance. Fortunately, trying to achieve a slim, sexy stomach is not a lost cause. You can blast away that fat and regain your health and your figure by gradually but proactively making changes to your diet and lifestyle.

If you want to fight belly fat after 40, here are seven important tips you need to try! Many people are getting by on five hours of sleep a night or less! Constant sleep deprivation can have side effects beyond the typical dragging feeling and need for a caffeine fix. A lack of sleep increases the levels of cortisol , the stress hormone, and insulin, both of which can cause your body to store fat — particularly that stubborn, uncomfortable layer of fat around the middle.

Commit to getting at least seven to eight hours of good quality sleep every night to keep your body and hormones in balance. Middle-aged women are dealing with imbalanced hormones, which makes us crave sugar and carbohydrates. White rice, white bread, standard pasta, and white-flour treats like cookies, cakes, and muffins all spike your blood sugar quickly. Trade those in for whole-grain and therefore, lower glycemic versions, such as whole-wheat pasta or brown rice.

Wonder why you are bloated? You might look to white wine first. White wine is sugar, and unless you need it as instant energy, your body will store sugar as fat — along with whatever else you are eating with it. The pounds inevitably creep on, usually through the belly and butt area. For those of us with food allergies , the yeast in wine can be a bigger issue: The good flora in your gut gets eaten up, leaving the bad to feast on the sugar and yeast, which take over.

Ditch the white wine for now. Red wine has a lower sugar content and has been shown to have antioxidant benefits — but still, enjoy in moderation. For women, a waist measurement of more than 35 inches 89 centimeters indicates an unhealthy concentration of belly fat and a greater risk of health problems. You can tone abdominal muscles with crunches or other targeted abdominal exercises, but just doing these exercises won't get rid of belly fat.

However, visceral fat responds to the same diet and exercise strategies that help you shed excess pounds and lower your total body fat. To battle belly fat:. Include physical activity in your daily routine. For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends moderate aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, for at least minutes a week or vigorous aerobic activity, such as running, for at least 75 minutes a week.

If you use a step counter, remember that it takes an average of 10, steps a day to prevent weight gain. Some studies indicate it might take 15, steps a day to prevent the regain of weight after significant weight loss. Strength training exercises also are recommended at least twice a week.

If you want to lose weight or meet specific fitness goals, you might need to exercise more. To lose excess fat and keep it from coming back, aim for slow and steady weight loss.

The starting point for bringing weight under control, in general, and combating abdominal fat, in particular, is regular moderate-intensity physical activity — at least 30 minutes per day and perhaps up to 60 minutes per day to control weight and lose belly fat.

Strength training exercising with weights may also help fight abdominal fat. Spot exercising, such as doing sit-ups, can tighten abdominal muscles, but it won't get at visceral fat. Diet is also important. Pay attention to portion size, and emphasize complex carbohydrates fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and lean protein over simple carbohydrates such as white bread, refined-grain pasta, and sugary drinks.

Replacing saturated fats and trans fats with polyunsaturated fats can also help. Scientists hope to develop drug treatments that target abdominal fat. For now, experts stress that lifestyle, especially exercise, is the very best way to fight visceral fat. It is a natural characteristic of virtually all plants. Wilting of leaves is part of their growing process. Only worry if the top or upper leaves turn yellow. Something bad is happening in your succulent plant in this case. Watering issues can be easily fixed using a fast-draining soil. This helps the succulent plant safe from any overwatering issues.

Actually succulents love it. But just make sure that the excess water is drained away. In fact, what I normally recommend is the soak and dry watering method. This means that every time you water your succulent, make sure that the soil is soaked. Then let the water drain and evaporate. Water again once the soil gets dried. But how do you do that? Well, the best way to do it is by examining the soil. Check the moisture or the stored water in the soil or pot.

You do that by inserting your finger in the soil. If you feel too much moisture or the soil is wet, then overwatering is the cause of the yellowing of the leaves. Another indication is when the soil sticks to your finger, it suggests that the soil is really wet. If this condition is not treated or adjusted, it will cause rotting the succulent plant. Rotting usually starts in the roots up to the stems and leaves. Once you are certain about the cause of the problem, take immediate action to recover the plant.

Late actions often result in the death of the plant. The most common reason is watering issues. Too much water can cause the leaves to swell, become soft and mushy, and eventually fall off. Leaves that fall off from overwatering appear wet and mushy, and the stem may appear puffy.

Remedy: Withhold watering until the top inch of the soil feels dry. Make sure the potting mix is well draining and that the plant is not sitting in water for loo long. If the wrong potting mix is used, re-pot the plant and switch out the soil with a well draining one. When repotting, let the plant dry out for a few days to recover and heal before transplanting and watering again. Let excess water drain out of the holes of the pot when watering.

If the pot does not have drainage holes, consider drilling one or alter watering techniques to prevent overwatering. Leaves can also fall off during extreme heat. During periods of intense heat or drought, succulents respond by dropping their leaves to help conserve energy and maintain their water supply. While this is a normal response in nature, there are steps you can take to minimize stress in your plant. Remedy: Move the plant in a shadier location away from the intense, full sun during a heatwave or drought.

The plant may also need to be watered more often during these conditions. Increase watering as needed or when the top inch of the soil feels dry to touch. Leaves can turn yellow from watering issues.

Overwatering and underwatering can both cause the leaves to turn yellow. Pay attention to other things that are going on with your plant. If the plant is well watered and the leaves are turning yellow, feel mushy and swollen, the plant is being overwatered. If they leaves are turning yellow, shriveling and wilting, and you know you have not watered your plant for a while, then the plant is most likely underwatered. Remedy: Adjust watering techniques.

If you suspect the plant is being overwatered, water less frequently and wait for the soil to dry out in between waterings. If the plant is being under watered, water the plant more thoroughly.

Most succulents like a good watering until excess water drips out of the holes of the pot. Wait until the soil dries before watering again. Leaves can turn yellow from lack of nutrients. Most commercial succulent potting soil come with added compost or fertilizer in the mix.

The plants can feed on those nutrients for quite some time. Eventually these nutrients are flushed out of the soil from constant watering and nutrients need to be added back in. Nutrients can be added in by re-potting the plant in fresh potting mix or by fertilizing the plant. Remedy: Re-pot the plant using a suitable well draining potting mix or apply fertilizer. Use a well balanced fertilizer designed for houseplants or a fertilizer blend specifically formulated for cacti and succulents.

Cacti and succulents are not heavy feeders and do not require a lot of fertilizers. Dilute the amount of fertilizer recommended on the package to half. If your plant's soil is a well-draining mix formulated for succulents and overwatering is not the cause, the problem could be the lighting conditions. Most succulents can handle lots of light, but a green succulent that begins to take on a lighter, bleached-out, yellowish color when grown in too much light, such as full sun for the entire day.

Moving the plant into a spot that gets bright, indirect light should correct this problem. A succulent infested with pests might develop yellow leaves, a sign of general distress. For example, mealybugs , which form a cottony covering on leaves or spider mites, tiny insects that can cause yellow spots as they feed, could cause the problem. Spraying a plant with ready-to-use insecticidal soap kills these pests. Source: sfgate. We offer exchange or store credit of full priced items returned within 10 days of original purchase.

Over-watering: Unfortunately, over-watering is a lot harder to fix than under-watering. Michaels was a powerful and emotive actor, as well as one of the funniest men in wrestling. It certainly wasn't a stretch for him to play the cocky and brash rebel.

The Heartbreak Kid was a part of some of the most memorable and hilarious backstage antics in wrestling history. Any highlight reel of the greatest moments in wrestling television has to include him mocking Hulk Hogan , his impersonation of Shane McMahon and him Superkicking a guy named Stan. He and Marty Jannetty weren't just another talented team competing in the golden age of tag teams, they started a revolution. The Rockers brought a dynamic energy to their matches and didn't settle for the same tired routine most guys were doing.

They innovated; they inspired. When it came time for Michaels to go out on his own, he broke apart the Rockers in momentous fashion.

Sending Jannetty through the barbershop window is one of the most iconic moments in WWE history. Tag partners turn on each other all the time, but fans will never forget the broken friendship, the broken glass, the shock of seeing Michaels Superkick Jannetty.

Speaking recently on an episode of Rasslin' with Brandon F. Walker , HBK was asked if he considers himself to be one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. Where I was just realizing that my idea of success was having a car and a one-bedroom apartment, and maybe one of the main guys in a local territory in South Texas.

But for me, it means the most to hear from the guys that I was in the ring with — because those are the people you feel truly know the difference, and could feel the difference. Mr WrestleMania would then go on to say how his aim was to always be a memorable match and a natural, comfortable experience for his opponents. So, hearing it from my my peers is clearly the best thing to me. I think everybody would give that to him. According to Ric Flair, Michaels basically "had a match with a ladder.

Michaels's unforgettable entrance into that match via zip-line was special too. It was there that Shawn's "Boyhood Dream" came true. Also, he was the first to compete in a vicious Hell in a Cell Match. He did so against a man that became synonymous with this match, The Undertaker. Later, on in his return in , he became the first man to compete in and win an Elimination Chamber Match. In the ring and as a character, Michaels could do many things and make you feel a plethora of emotions.

Notably, he could make you laugh and cry. In addition, he could make you cheer or boo. If you had a ticket to a WWE show and Shawn Michaels was on the card, you knew that you were going to get a 5-star quality performance. Even up to his final stretch with the company, Michaels always gave an honest percent.

And the tradition of applying the sindoor begins on the day of marriage. During the wedding ceremony, the groom puts sindoor on the hair parting of his bride, thereby solemnising his sacramental union and making her his partner for life. Traditionally in India, the wife is referred to as a husband's Ardhangini , meaning better half.

The ritual of sindoor application is one of the most important customs in most Hindu wedding ceremonies. Read on to know what it signifies. Please note: avoid the use of sindoor made of chemical substances. Go for the organic ones. Sindoor is the symbol of fertility. And since progeny is one of the aspects of a marriage, it is believed that sindoor consisting of mercury was used in the olden days to stimulate the reproductive organs to boost fertility.

It also keeps the blood pressure and stress under control, ancient belief suggests. In the olden days, sindoor was applied from the forehead to the point of the pituitary gland also called the master gland which regulates most of the bodily functions and boosts well-being by stimulating the hormone-secreting glands. It is said that women during the Harappa and Mohenjodaro times too applied the sindoor.

And if this is true, then the ritual of sindoor application is years old. The customary practice of applying sindoor on the forehead of Indian married women has also roots from Vedic age. The exact hair parting is known as maang. Sindoor is also considered as one of the 16 adornments in various traditions followed by the Indian Hindu women. As it is red in colour and mixed with turmeric, it is also called as kumkum.

Mercury is also mixed to get spiritual benefit by applying sindoor on forehead. Groom is adorned with Sindoor by bride. Some people believe that, it is also a new practice, not mentioned in any of the religious texts.

In India, marriage is regarded as a new life for both the bride and groom. Most of the religions in India, rooted with spiritual values perform auspicious ceremonies before and after the marriage. In Hinduism marriage ceremonies are observed for few days. Sindoor dana is one of the most important custom in the Hindu weddings. There are communities where the mother of the groom welcomes the bride at home by putting sindoor.

More than looking at as a ritual, it is also for the longevity of the husband. If we look at the modern society, applying sindoor defines being married or unmarried. It is believed that this custom even existed during the Harappan culture, as documented by the archaeologists.

See all Articles. Related Pujas. Many women wear sindoor like a dot which is called bindu or bindi. When you need to draw something, a line or anything, you put a dot first, because without a dot you cannot draw anything.

So, a bindu symbolizes a seed, without seed you cannot grow anything, therefore it is said to be a symbol of fertility and growth. Astrologically, Aries which is called mesha rashi resides on the forehead of the human body.

Mars is the planet which was ruled by the lord of Aries. Mars is red. Sindoor being red and also applied on the forehead, holds a very important place in Hinduism. Sindoor affects the well-being of not only the married woman but also of her significant other. In many of the Hindu festivals like Navratri and Teeja, sindoor plays a very important role. It is particularly popular in West Bengal. There is a Bengali Hindu tradition where women smear each other with sindoor on Vijayadashami, the last day of Durga Pooja.

In this ritual, Bengali married women apply sindoor on the forehead and feet of the goddess. Here the luscious red is used to celebrate womanhood. In festivals like Teeja, the husband is required to apply the sindoor on the parting of the hair of their wives to pay her respect and show her that, their relationship is as strong and deep as the colour of this vermillion.

Application of sindoor still holds the same significance and value. It also shows her undying love for her significant other. However, with all the modernization, the tradition of applying sindoor now is merely a formality for this generation in several sections of Hindu society. Sindoor now has been accessorized, it is modernized by the new generation.

Apart from being the symbol of matrimony for a Hindu woman, sindoor red vermilion powder has some scientific significance.
