Initially, there's plenty of conflict between this trio of Sailor Guardians and Sailor Moon's team. After all, the Sailor Starlights appear to be interfering with Sailor Moon's team going about their normal duty of protecting the planet. The Outer Guardians in particular are harsh with them.

In defense of the Sailor Starlights, they were just looking for their own princess. As is par for the course when Usagi meets someone new, she goes out of her way to try to befriend them. That works out for her in some respects, but it also creates a bit of a romantic debacle for her in the anime. The Sailor Starlights first duty is to their princess, which is why they never seem to get particularly close to Usagi, but are more casual friends.

That's initially because she develops a bit of a crush on the new kid. When she discovers that Haruka is Sailor Uranus, it doesn't lessen her interest. Instead, it only causes Usagi to repeatedly appeal to them that they need to unite their forces. Eventually, Haruka and her friends agree. Their connection with Usagi is what gets them to stand with the Inner Guardians, something they try to avoid doing when they first appear. They develop a deep love for one another, but it's one born out of familial connection.

Initially, Chibiusa isn't a part of the fight because her Sailor Guardians abilities haven't been accessed. She has a hard time reconciling the teenage girl who doesn't know what she's doing with her poised and powerful mother, which is the big source of their tension a lot of the time. Though Sailor Mars is the second Sailor Guardian that Usagi helps to awaken, the two aren't the closest of friends.

In the anime, Rei and Usagi rarely see eye-to-eye on anything. In the manga, Rei is a bit more distant from the other Sailor Guardians as a result of her being a shrine maiden. Rei spends just as much time away from them fulfilling her shrine maiden duties as she does with them fulfilling her Sailor Guardian duties. She takes her role seriously, but that can also cause her to be more serious with Usagi and the others, not allowing her to treat them all as her closest friends, even though they clearly are.

Minako and Usagi could have been sisters. Their similar appearance allows Minako to pass as the Moon Princess as a decoy. This romance was short-lived, as Nephrite died trying to protect Naru from monsters sent by Zoisite. She's heartbroken and locks herself in her room, with Usagi coming by and trying to cheer her up.

She eventually comes out and goes on to date her friend Umino, a weird geek that hangs around her and Usagi. These relationships were not canon in the manga and Sailor Moon Crystal. Naru even made an appearance in the live-action adaptation of the series, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon.

This incarnation of Naru was jealous of Usagi's new friends, Ami Mizuno in particular. She later found out about Usagi's alter ego as Sailor Moon and was even injured in a fight, but eventually went on to forgive Usagi for keeping secrets. Naru hasn't been treated the best in the series, even though she was the first person Sailor Moon rescued.

There could have been so much done with her character's place among the Sailor Senshi. Usagi really should have opened up to her about what was really going on after Nephrite's death, but she didn't say anything and just kept Naru in the dark. Even in the DiC English dub of the first anime, Naru wasn't treated with the respect she deserved -- she was renamed Molly Baker and given a thick, grating Brooklyn accent.

Even though Tuxedo Mask is technically the "Sailor Earth" of the group, Naru's proneness to being attacked should have been incentive to make her an honorary Senshi. The complexity and darkness of Hotaru's character find their foil in Chibiusa's optimism and extroversion, and as a result, both girls develop and grow thanks to their heartwarming friendship. Plagued by seizures and often ridiculed by classmates, Hotaru is a lonely girl. She believes even the cheerful Chibiusa will be pushed away after witnessing her condition, but Chibiusa accepts Hotaru for who she is, and that creates a bond lasting bond between the girls.

Both Chibiusa and Hotaru possess darkness in their hearts, and their deep understanding of each other is what saves Hotaru and essentially the world. Their planets respectively symbolize the masculine and the feminine, and their Greek counterparts, Aries and Aphrodite, are lovers in ancient mythology. While the '90s anime positions Rei as being closer to Usagi, the manga puts a special emphasis on Minako's and Rei's friendship.

Similar to Hotaru and Chibiusa, the element that makes this relationship touching is the understanding shared between these two fierce warriors. These two headstrong women are deeply devoted to Usagi, and through their sense of duty, the two Guardians develop a bond based on support and compassion. For many fans, one of the most influential displays of female friendship is demonstrated by the relationship between the Inner Guardians; a friendship that survives death and lasts for generations.

The force guiding the Sailor Guardians is love, love for their princess, each other, and the world they fight to save.

The Guardians repeatedly sacrifice themselves to save Usagi, and she in turn does the same. The Guardians selflessly follow each other into battle knowing full well that together they can overcome anything, and this iconic friendship is arguably one of the most touching in the series. Fans often express disappointment at the handling of Naru's character; while Naru loses screen time over the course of the series, her friendship with Usagi is still an integral part of the anime.

In the first season , as Usagi is learning to navigate her powers and dealing with her fear and anxiety about her newfound powers and responsibilities, she needs a reason to learn to be selfless.

Having a best friend who is constantly targeted by the enemy gives Usagi an incentive to learn to be brave. By putting her friendship with Naru before her fears, Usagi starts to recognize her own potential and begins to embrace her role fully. In the manga, Rei is shown as being distant from the other Guardians due to her obligations as a shrine maiden, but in the '90s anime, Rei and Usagi develop a sister-like relationship. While Rei and Usagi often fight with one another, beyond the surface level bickering lies a relationship based on trust and sacrifice.

Usagi brings out Rei's goofy side, and Rei helps Usagi to find the courage to stand up for herself.
