Saad Mohseni, the director general of MOBY Media Group, which owns the independent news channel Tolo TV, said that he had been in touch with Karzai and Abdullah and that his impression was that the meetings between the Taliban and the former leaders were little more than show. Both Karzai and Abdullah were on a Taliban list of wanted people, and former government officials said they were concerned for their safety as the Taliban intensify their search for members of the Afghan government security services.
An aide to Abdullah reached by telephone said that he was not available to speak to the news media. Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal, a former finance minister who met with Taliban leaders on Sunday in Kabul alongside Karzai and Abdullah, said that no official negotiations had begun.

Instead, people come to her. They often come to see me and share their thoughts. Zinat Karzai's lack of visibility has prompted criticism from some Afghans, especially the younger generation, that she is not doing enough to stand up for women's rights and to set a positive example. All the more so, her critics say, because she is a qualified doctor who before her marriage worked for some years in Pakistan.
When she talks about current circumstances, Mrs Karzai is not just talking about security issues. Her role is clearly also constrained by cultural sensitivities.
