Which s4 is better
In my head lb ft of torque is a lot and should be allowed to get to work. But the first reaction when you ask anything of the drivetrain is to kickdown, which not only introduces another delay, but feels wrong in a diesel, which naturally feels and sounds better at low revs. Calibration is the issue here, and regulations are to blame. Pull the paddles, get used to applying the throttle a fraction earlier then you need it, just as a prewarning, that sort of thing.
Fourth and fifth are all you need on a B-road, and you surf along with effortless punch, using no more than 3,rpm. The motor is actually pretty eager round to 4,rpm, but loses composure and ties up as it closes in on the 5,rpm red line. The rest of the car is harder to criticise. The S4 Avant is the right size, the right sportiness.
It threads easily down a B-road, not taking up too much space, but is taut and agile enough to be amusing. It cruises well, though; nice and refined, it laps up miles better than any previous S4. Very well equipped, surprisingly. Navarra Blue for me. Standard kit includes 19s, wireless charging, the Back to the S4. It does the job, and does it well. No other car this size is quite as well built as the Audi S4.
What is different to the pre-facelift version is the infotainment. Every model gets a bright, high-definition inch widescreen atop its dashboard, DAB radio, Bluetooth, built-in sat-nav and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Space in the back of both the saloon and estate S4 is very nearly as generous as up front.
Its clever volt tech means it responds quicker than most diesels when you stamp on the throttle and pulls extremely hard over a usefully wide band of revs, meaning the S4 saloon will crack mph in just 4.
The only downside is the noise, which is unmistakably diesel-like, despite some fake sporty sound being pumped into the cabin. Slow things down and the Audi S4 can play the quiet, comfy cruiser too. It manages to take potholes and ruts in its stride and in its more relaxed driving modes has light steering for urban manoeuvres. At a constant cruise on the motorway, its large alloys and stiff suspension cause lots of noise, either.
So, there are ultimately more rewarding driving experiences out there, but the Audi S4 is guaranteed to put a smile on your face on a country road. While the Audi S4 proves its reliable performance over time, as well as its tremendous value, the zippy sports car has a lot more to offer to used car shoppers than just a great price tag.
According to Edmunds, the Audi S4 comes with a sportier engine than its bigger brother, the A4. The 3.
